About Kids to Kids
Kids to Kids is an educational initiative supported by the kind financial donations and voluntary services of individuals and organizations locally and abroad. Kids to Kids is based in the Westlands area of Nairobi, Kenya. The programme seeks to be a bridge for "children at risk" by helping them find their way into Nairobi's public schools. This is done by offering an education programme where children who have never been to school or have dropped out of school can catch up through attentive one-on-one instruction.
After one year in the program, Kids to Kids sends the children off to public schools with a new uniform, a school bag, school supplies and pays their lunch money for one year. The programme is able to assist 30 children each year as it seeks to bridge the gap between children in poverty and free primary education.
News and Updates
September 2004 started a whole new way of doing things at Kids to Kids. Before the advent of free primary education in Kenya, Kids to Kids focused their efforts on longer-term informal schooling for children. But in January 2004, everything changed as the new government made primary education free for all Kenyan children. However, for many of the disadvantaged children, they could not join the free primary schools due to lack of the little money needed to buy a uniform and school supplies. Others who tried to join ran into problems in finding placement in the now overcrowded public schools.
In response, Kids to Kids changed by becoming a bridge to help children in poverty find their way to public schools. As the term started in September 2004, the new children who join Kids to Kids were excited and eager to learn. For most of these children, it was their first time to be in a classroom. The Kids to Kids staff worked hard to create a program that not only taught basic subjects, but basic life skills as well. During the term, the children learned simple lessons about classroom behavior, coming to school on time, and completing homework. Out of the twenty-two who joined the program, sixteen were prepared and ready for placement the public schools in January 2005. The rest started behind for another term to recieve more one on one attention before entering public schools. For the ones who were living a Leaver's Ceremony was organised for them where they recieved a certificate, new uniform, new backpack, school supplies, and a promise for lunch money for two school terms. It was Kids to Kids hope that the Kids to Kids program had helped them find their wings to fly.
