About Kids to Kids
Kids to Kids is an educational initiative sponsored by Christ's Church / Children's Church in the Westlands area of Nairobi, Kenya. The program seeks to be a bridge for impoverished children by helping them find their way into Nairobi’s public schools. This is done by offering a three month informal education program where children who have never been to school can catch up through attentive one-on-one instruction. After these three months, Kids to Kids sends the children off to public schools with a new uniform, a school bag, school supplies and lunch money for two terms. The program is able to assist 25 children each term as it seeks to bridge the gap between children in poverty and free primary education.
News and Updates
September started a whole new way of doing things at Kids to Kids. Before the advent of free primary education in Kenya, Kids to Kids focused their efforts on longer-term informal schooling for children. But in January, everything changed as the new government made primary education free for all Kenyan children. In response, Kids to Kids also changed by becoming a bridge to help children in poverty find their way to public schools.
After two school terms, all 60 of the children at Kids to Kids had entered public schools. So when September rolled around and a new school term started, new children were enrolled at Kids to Kids. Many of these children could not go to school because they lacked the little money needed to buy a uniform and school supplies. Others had tried to start school, but ran into problems in finding placement in the now overcrowded public schools.
As the new children started in September, they were excited and eager to learn. For most of these children, it was their first time to be in a classroom. The Kids to Kids staff worked hard to create a program that not only taught basic subjects, but basic life skills as well. This term, the children learned simple lessons about classroom behavior, coming to school on time, and completing homework. Out of the twenty-two who entered this term, sixteen will be entering public schools in January. The rest will stay behind another term to recieve more one on one attention before entering public schools. Those who leave will participate in a Leaver's Ceremony where they will recieve a certificate, new uniform, new backpack, school supplies, and a promise for lunch money for two school terms. We wish them well in their journey, and hope Kids to Kids has helped them find their wings to fly.
